Week 1 - Compliance Variances

Compliance Variances

Did we do what se planned to do?

Did the patient progress through the care process as planned?

These are compliance variances. Are right boxes checked?

Compliance variances are important for three reasons:

  • Patient documentation. Do we know what we did / did not do for the patient.
  • Process documentation. Are we doing what we planned or are people ignoring the pathway?
  • Context. They are the cause - for the most part - of the outcomes we attain from the process. This puts the effectiveness variances in context, and any improvement effort.

Examples

  • Patient extubated per protocol
  • Patient ambulated per protocol
  • Lab tests performed
  • Patient can verbalize and demonstrate teaching
