RSS What?

RSS (Real Simple Syndication) was originally created by Netscape (the original web browser) to describe a web site and its contents. The standard has expanded over the years, and is now is the backbone of "new media": blogs, podcasts, etc.

A "newsreader" (see below) program on your computer will periodically connect to the web site and download the RSS formatted file. The newsreader will read the file and display the news for you; usually with a link that will open your web browser and take you to the web site for more details.

Medfield Online uses RSS to syndicate news about Medfield.

How do I do this RSS thinggy?

Copy the URL for our news feed (). Open your news reader and paste the URL in the appropriate place (it may be under a Subscribe command).

Many newsreaders are available for Windows and Mac. The most popular Windows newsreader is NewsGator (www.newsgator.com), other are listed at www.newsreader.com. I use NetNewsWire Lite on my Mac's.

Why RSS?

RSS feeds have some advantages over both email and web browsing. Most importantly, the newsreader does all the work; you don't need to visit the web site unless there's a story your interested in. The stories are delivered as they are written, so you're always up-to-date. Email inbox clutter is reduced. The file format is also easier to display on PDA, iPods, cell phones, and other handheld email/web browsers.

Not that RSS is for everyone, and every situation. I will continue to publish the Monday Morning Medfield News and this web site will continue to carry the news.
